Friends of the Apollo Pavilion
The Apollo Pavilion Community Association (APCA) works to keep the Apollo Pavilion active in the public imagination and preserve it for future generations.
The APCA is dedicated to ensuring that Victor Pasmore’s Apollo Pavilion plays a pivotal role in the life of the local community. Through their subscriptions our Friends help support this work and ensure that the Pavilion remains prominent in the public eye.
The Association was originally formed in 2003 in an attempt to save the Pavilion from the very real threat of demolition, which it had faced for many years. In this regard the Association played a crucial role in lobbying support for the Pavilion to be extensively refurbished, a project that was finally realised in 2009 thanks to a grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund.
A successful application was made to English Heritage and the DCMS, which in December 2011 resulted the Pavilion being awarded Grade II* status.
Since 2009 the Association has worked closely with Durham County Council Arts Team and other partners in developing programmes of work to raise awareness of the Pavilion and broaden understanding of its unique place in the cultural landscape of the United Kingdom. To date this work has encompassed a series cultural events and major exhibitions alongside an extensive education programme working with the young people of Peterlee and County Durham and beyond.
The APCA has become a membership by subscription organisation. To join costs just £1.00 annually and will entitle members to attend meetings, receive minutes and also vote on any matters arising. Everyone joining the Friends of the Pavilion scheme will automatically become members of the APCA.
However if you increase your membership fee there are other advantages. All friends will receive advance invitations of APCA activities, free admission to a number of talks and events, invitations to special Friends events and regular updates to our programme through the Friends newsletter.
